how do you do this please? I have never updated mine could this be the reason why it so rarely manages to auto detect? -

YES MY VCI IS UPDATED 1.06 SOAFTWARE AND THE ONLY OTHER DIAG TOOL I HAVE
IS MATCO DETERMINATOR 5.0 BUT IT WILL NOT AUTO DETECT. -

Like EDE says, would you happen to have another (OBDII) tool available to test weather or not this is maxisys related or more vehicle wise. I have to find lots of car manually. Might be because we are living in Europe, might be because our shop gets more older cars in, but either way; it happens. Wouldn't be too concerned about it.
It's not too hard to find the right info if you have repair software at hand to find the correct car info by license plate or VIN number -
